Student Growth: Mustafa
Mustafa is an 8–year old male with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Mustafa is a non-verbal communicator that communicates primarily through gestures, facial expressions, vocalizations, or his dynamic display speech generating device for a variety of functions including directing, requesting, and commenting. Mustafa relies on visual schedules, intermittent breaks, token systems, and extended response times to maintain focus and complete presented tasks. Receptively, he is able to follow directions with visual supports and respond to wh- questions about a presented story, scenario, and/or picture scene. Expressively, Mustafa can navigate within his speech generating device to form 3-4 word sentences to comment, request, and respond. Mustafa can also make requests for desired items (utilizing picture symbols, speech generating device, and or gestures) label feelings by selecting the appropriate cell (i.e., “happy”/ “sad”/ “angry”), and greet familiar peers and adults by selecting appropriate cells on a speech generating device (i.e., “hello”/ “goodbye”) and/or waving.
Annual Goal 1: Mustafa will independently make requests using core vocabulary words (i.e., more/help/go,etc.) utilizing his speech generating device as appropriate in 4/5 trials over three consecutive sessions as measured by check lists and teacher/provider observations
Annual Goal 2: Mustafa will independently respond to yes/no questions utilizing his speech generating device as appropriate in 4/5 trials over three consecutive sessions as measured by check lists and teacher/provider observations
Annual Goal 1: Mustafa will label a pronoun (she, he, they) + action + object in response to "What is ____ doing?" when looking at a picture or after listening to a 1-2 sentence story in 8/10 trials over three consecutive sessions as measured by check lists and teacher/provider observations
Annual Goal 2: Mustafa will respond to factual "What", "Who" and "Where" questions when presented with a short story and/or visual scene in 8/10 trials over three consecutive sessions as measured by check lists and teacher/provider observations
Annual Goal 1: Mustafa will formulate grammatically correct phrases/sentences to describe objects/pictures via subject + verb + adjective + object in 4 out of 5 opportunities across 3 consecutive sessions as measured by checklists and teacher/provider observations
Annual Goal 2: Mustafa will respond to personal and social questions (i.e., “What do you like?” “What is your favorite color/food/toy?” “How old are you?” “When is your birthday?”) utilizing his AAC device to generate an appropriate response in 4 out of 5 opportunities across 3 consecutive sessions as measured by checklists and teacher/provider observations.
When Mustafa entered kindergarten, he was nonverbal and had no access to a speech-generating device. Despite his strong receptive language and cognitive skills, he lacked a way to communicate, often expressing frustration through crying or tantrums. To support his communication needs, I conducted an assistive technology evaluation and trialed several systems, including GoTalk, LAMP, and Proloquo2Go.
Proloquo2Go proved to be the ideal fit for Mustafa. Its motor-planning support, customizable core and fringe vocabulary, and user-friendly interface aligned perfectly with his learning style and strengths. From the moment he received the device, Mustafa eagerly explored and engaged with it, showing a natural curiosity and enthusiasm for communication.
Over the past 3–4 years, Mustafa’s growth has been remarkable. He progressed from making simple one-word requests using core vocabulary to independently combining core and fringe words across multiple contexts and not just during speech sessions. He can recall words after only one or two exposures. When Mustafa encounters a word he doesn’t know or cannot find, he effectively uses strategies like seeking assistance from his communication partner or using the device to say, “I need help.”
In addition to his AAC use, Mustafa has begun approximating spoken words, including “hi,” “bye,” “yes,” and “no,” showing that the device is enhancing, not limiting, his natural speech development. Proloquo2Go has helped Mustafa communicate, build his language skills, and express himself more fully.
