Language Acquisition through Motor Planning-Words for Life (LAMP-WFL)

LAMP WFL is a high-tech communication application, meaning it is an electronic device or software that generates speech to support expressive communication. LAMP WFL uses a motor planning approach in which vocabulary words remain in consistent locations, allowing students to develop automaticity in accessing words through repeated motor patterns. This consistent layout facilitates more fluid and efficient communication, strengthens expressive language skills, and fosters greater independence. With its wide-ranging vocabulary, LAMP WFL offers substantial opportunities for communicative growth when it is appropriately matched to a student’s needs.

 

 

 

 

A key feature of LAMP WFL is its use of vocabulary levels, which allow the system to grow with the student while maintaining stable word locations. This consistency supports motor memory and promotes independent communication. Vocabulary levels range from one-hit access for beginning communicators to full vocabulary systems that support complex sentence structure, grammar, and academic language. Rather than moving words as students progress, additional vocabulary is revealed within the same motor patterns, ensuring continuity and preserving learned pathways.

 

 

 

 

 

 

As the speech therapist, it is my role to customize LAMP Words for Life to meet each student’s individual needs, organizing and adjusting vocabulary so the device becomes their “voice” and helps them communicate more easily, confidently, and independently across all areas of their day. I choose and adjust vocabulary levels based on each student’s language skills, attention, motor abilities, and readiness to combine words. I carefully add new vocabulary while keeping word locations consistent to support motor learning, helping students grow from using single words to forming longer, more meaningful sentences.
